Assam Flood : Situation worsens in Majuli
Guwahati, Oct 6 (UNA): The flood situation in Majuli, Assam worsened further on Saturday as 50 more villages were inundated by flood waters. Flood affected people have taken shelter on high lands and embankments said official of flood control department on Saturday.
The state disaster response force has been pressed into service in Majuli to rescue marooned people. The residents of flood-hit Majuli Island complained about non-supply of adequate relief materials where more than 50 villages have been badly hit by flood.
Majuli is the seat of the state's neo-Vaishnavite culture. The island Jorhat district, which is inhabited by several tribal communities, has been always under constant threat of floods and erosion.
TheBrahmaputra Board says that according to a study, annual erosion during floods has wiped out more than 225 sq km of the island in the last 90 years.
