Vaiphei tribe celebrate Thazing Lap

Imphal, Sep 27 : The 1st State Level "Thazing Lap" an autumn festival of Vaiphei Tribe was celebrated under the theme ‘Cultural Festival for Enlightened of Survival’ at Kulbung veng, Salam Patong, Sadar hill on Thursday.
In Manipur the earliest instance of the Thazing Lap festival was celebrated way back in 1830 at Kulbung veng, a commemorative stone marking the event stand till this day at the place where the festival was held today.
Delivering a keynote address Rev. Prim Vaiphei, president of All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO) said that the Thazing Lap festival is an important Kut (festival) celebrated by the Vaiphei tribe. It is a festival that is exclusive to the Vaipheis as there is no evidence of kindred tribes having a similar festival.
‘Thazing’ in Vaiphei means autumn while ‘Lap’ means prior. The Thazing Lap is essentially a recreational post sowing festival that takes place after the entire sowing process including weeding, clearing and burning of fields, transplanting and sowing of paddy etc is completed during the Muktha or the summer monsoon season.
The antecedents or origin of the Thazing Lap festival is traced back to a period in Vaiphei history when various Vaiphei clans inhabited a settlement called Khuavaiphei, believed to be located in present day Chin hills, Burma (Myanmar) added Prim Vaiphei.
Its celebration as a major festival of the Khuavaiphei settlers can be found from around the year 1560 said Prim Vaiphei.
Speaking as a chief guest, Thangso Baite, outer Manipur MP said that people are regarded because of our culture and its represent us in the society.
So, Vaiphei people should know our culture and uplift it and today festival Thazing Lap should be celebrated every year as we don’t have any festival.
The festival was also attended by MLA T Manga Vaiphei, ADCs, and bureaucrats of Vaiphei tribes, Villages chief and hundreds of public from across the state.
The festival was marked by a grand feast where every participant did not return without having a lunch.
