New Delhi, June 14: With 43 days left for the London Games to begin the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) is sparing no effort to make sure that the Indian boxing contingent is match ready and in top shape to take on the best in the world. To this effect IABF, has decided to send a 17 member Indian boxing team to Dublin, Ireland for a 15 day joint training camp. The camp being organized by the Irish Amateur Boxing Association from 15th – 30th June 2012 is expected to have participation from six to seven countries including the likes of Russia. The tour might also give the Indian boxers a chance to spar and train with probable opponents who they might encounter at the London Games. The Indian squad that consist of 11 boxer (including six Olympic qualified pugilists) four coaches, one physiotherapists and one doctor, will leave for the scenic European island on 15 Jun 2012.

Chief National Coach of the Indian team, GS Sandhu said “The joint trainings and sparring sessions in Ireland will be beneficial to our boys in many ways. Competition would be of a friendly nature; therefore it will help our boxer’s release a bit of the pressure. And since the weather conditions will be similar to London the tour will also aid us in getting use to the cooler climate.” He further added, “The tour will also help the non qualified boxer get some good foreign training exposure under their belt”.

Secretary General IABF Brig PK Muralidharan Raja stated that the joint training camp will be instrumental in India’s preparation for the London Games. He said, “This camp is part of the final phase of preparation for the Olympics and the idea is to acclimatize our boxers to the weather conditions and provide them with a good exposure that will help them maintain their rhythm and keep match fit”.
