Assam Rifles hosts Ningol Chakkouba

IMPHAL, November 9: Keeping up with the time honoured Manipuri traditions and true to its credo of ‘Friends of Manipur’, IGAR (South) celebrated Ningol Chakkouba on Saturday.

Maj Gen Rajeev Chopra, IGAR (South) appreciated the invaluable contribution of the Manipuri womenfolk in all walks of life.

He appealed to the women folk to continue their inimitable role of maintaining peace, development and harmony in the society and emphasized that in the current milieu, wherein the state is undergoing a drastic transformation, the women can make a big difference.

Dr Ch Jamini Devi, former chairperson Manipur State Commission for Women, who also attended the celebration said that the bond of love between brother and sister is shown in Ningol Chak Kouba festival. This is to foster unity to bring peace in the state where crimes, especially those against the women, have kept on increasing. If the relation today shows that brothers are safeguarding their sisters crime may decrease.

The women expressed gratitude towards the noble gesture of Assam Rifles and said that the event will further strengthen the bond between the security forces and the local populace and will definitely contribute towards bringing peace to the state.

The event was organised by 30 Assam Rifles part of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) wherein womenfolk from various walks of life and communities of the state were invited.

Maj Gen Rajeev Chopra, IG AR (South) extended a traditional welcome to the ningols who in reciprocation offered fruits and other eatables.

This was followed by lighting of the lamp and speeches by prominent women dignitaries and IG AR (South) himself.

The programme also marked the felicitation of various women for their outstanding contribution towards the society.

The lunch was organised as per Manipuri traditions, with everyone eating the traditional Manipuri meal on plantain leaves and being served by the personnel of Assam Rifles attired in pheijoms.

The spell binding function was graced by over 200 ningols.
