Need For Strong Post-Harvest Infrastructure, Appropriate Farm Technologies In The North East: Pawar

New Delhi, November 30: Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Minister Sharad Pawar today advocated the strengthening of post-harvest infrastructure in the north-eastern states and evolving farm technologies suitable for this region.

Pawar, who inaugurated a new block of the College of Agriculture Engineering and Post Harvest Technology near Ranipool in Sikkim today, expressed the hope that this post-harvest technology college, the upcoming agriculture college in Arunachal and horticulture college in Sikkim and existing agricultural institutions will usher in fast growth of agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy and fishery sectors in the north east.

The Minister said if India exported agricultural produce worth Rs 2.32 lakh crore this year after meeting the consumption need of its 1.2 billion population and stocking foodgrains much above the buffer norms, the credit goes to the farming community, scientists, technologists and state governments.

Pawar said, India is today the highest producer of milk, pulses and, jute and is second in the world in the production of rice, wheat, sugarcane, groundnuts, vegetable foods and cotton. It is also the leading producer of spices and plantation crops as well as livestock, fisheries and poultry. India is thus emerging as a major player in the international market.

The Governor of Sikkim Shri Shrinivas Patil, Chief Minister Shri Pawan Chamling, and Vice Chancellor of Central Agriculture University Dr S N Puri addressed the inaugural function. State Agriculture Minister Shri D N Thakarpa, Lok Sabha MP Sikkim Shri P D Rai were also present on the occasion.

Earlier during the week, the visiting Minister laid the foundation of Arunachal’s first agriculture college near Itanagar, and inaugurated a conference of agriculture and horticulture ministers and another of animal husbandry ministers of the north eastern states at Gangtok.
