Unemployment linked to drug abuse

IMPHAL, September 18: The unemployment problem is directly related to the issue of drug abuse in the state, said Superintendent of NCB, RK Ibungosana today at the Lamyanba Sanglen.

Coalition against Drugs & Alcohol, CADA observed its 6th foundation at the Lamyanba Sanglen under the motto ‘Health for Future’ today.

The day was attended by Social Welfare, Joint Director K Sanajaoba Singh, CADA president, A Rabindra, NCB Superintendent, RK Ibungosana and Freedom Editor, RK Ranendrajit as the chief guest, president and guests of honour, respectively.

Continuing his speech, the Superintendent said, an industrial revolution could play a major role in fighting the drug abuse menace in the state. He elaborated further that an industrial revolution is only possible when there is proper and enough power supply in the state.

“Narcotics department as a small government department needs enforcement from other concerned departments in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse in the state.”Elaborating on the legal actions against any acquitted drug trafficker, he said all drug trafficking related cases are handled by the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, NDPS court and any punishment depends upon the drug quantity found with the trafficker.

“Any person acquitted three times on drug trafficking charges could also be awarded with the capital punishment, it has never happened in the state”, he added.

He stressed the need to check the rising narco-terrorism in the state and that anyone found involved needs to be punished.

He elaborated there are several traffickers who are illegally armed and such traffickers come under the group of ‘Narco terrorism’. People should be fully aware of the issue at hand and everyone including NCB, Police, NGOs like CADA should unite before it gets out of hand, he concluded.

Meanwhile, the NCB Superintendent also donated a sum of Rs 2000 to CADA.UCM, organization secretary, Yk Dhiren stressed it is hard to find a drug free household in the state today. He continued that only the women folk are involved in the fight against the drug menace however there is a need for the whole of society to join in.

Freedom editor, RK Ranendrajit said the state is witnessing a large inflow of drugs into the state. He continued that the biggest question before the people of the state is to find who are behind this inflow as the state authorities are yet to reach the bottom of the issue at hand.

There is a need of spreading awareness amongst the general public and educate the students of the state from the pre-nursery to fight the issue, he said.

Social Welfare Jt Director, K Sanajaoba Singh also expressed his department’s full support to CADA.He continued the government has schemes however, there the workings of several NGOs in the state is not up to the mark.

He also donated Rs 5000 to CADA from his department. The day was also attended by several civil society leaders.
