3rd Guwahati Woolen Expo 2013 from Feb 6

Guwahati , Feb 4, 2013:- The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the leading institution of business and industry in the Eastern and North Eastern Region of India with 86 years of experience which is engaged in facilitating growth of trade and commerce in India in general and the North Eastern States in particular is focused primarily on developing trade and commerce and promoting industrialization in the region

Keeping this in view ICC along with the Central Wool Development Board, Ministry of Textiles Govt. of India has decided of organizing woolen exhibitions cum sale of 10 days duration in the North Eastern states mainly with the objective of showcasing and promoting the various woolen products in the markets of Northeast India which is relatively where winter are colder than other places and to encourage the weavers of this sector in marketing their products; and to conduct the publicity campaign to promote utilization and production of wool. After successfully holding the 1st and 2nd Guwahati Woolen Expo at Shilpagram and MRD Trade Centre in 2010, the 3rd Guwahati WOOLEN EXPO is being organized at Shilpagram NEZCC Campus, Panjabari Guwahati from 6th to 15th Feb 2013.  The 10 day 3rd  Guwahati Woolen Expo 2013 will be formally inaugurated on 6th Feb 2013.

In a press release Mr. Ishantor Sobhapandit ICC-NER Regional Director sought support from walks of life and appealed all Guwahatihites to visit the ten days wool carnival in Guwahati. He further added that North eastern region as such does not produce wool, but the demand of woolen products is huge due to the fact that North eastern part of India is comprised mainly of hilly states where the duration of winter last longer than comparatively other parts of the plain states of India. For example, in the states like Meghalaya, Nagaland (Kohima mainly), Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, winter last longer so we are hopeful that this initiative by ICC and CWDB will receive warm response from all corner of Guwahati and Kamrup Metro. ‘Although wool is not produced in the North East, but there is great demand of raw wool from the North east weaver’s point of view. This is because the traditional handloom weaving is practiced as a household industry in the North East, where apart from using mulberry and other non-mulberry fiber, wool is also used. The wool expo can play a major role in preventing the middle-man’s role in purchase of wool fiber.’ said Sobhapandit in a press statement released today.

Shri H N Das Former Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, Mr. Surendra Kumar, Director Indian Institute of Handloom Technology and Shri Jagadish Borah former Managing Director NEHHDC and Convenor of Handloom and Handicraft committee ICC_NER will address the inaugural function in presence of hosts of buyers and sellers and officials of Central Wool Development Board.
