MN-OI-S will be new registration number for IW

IMPHAL, November 15: Ever since the first motor vehicle of this state was awarded the registration number “MNS”, there has been significant rise in the number of motor vehicles in Manipur and the new series “MN-OI-X” is presently issued. The said number is also on the verge of exhaustion and the new series will be “MN-OI-S” will be allotted to the new motor owners.

The new “MN-OIX” series is nearly exhausted and only 1000 numbers are remaining, he said. Afterwards, the new series which will be given for Imphal West district will be of the ‘MN-OI-S” series and registration, he said.

He said the series will be tendered to only four wheelers and not to two or three wheelers. IFP queried on the problematic scenario of the rise in the number of vehicles in the State and its effects to traffic system to the concerned DTO. He said, “ There are about 1,58,778 number of motor vehicles in Imphal West district only and the work of compiling the number for the rest of the districts is currently underway and the actual number cannot be given as of yet,” he said.

The number of vehicles registered for the district of Imphal West is categorized to 7809 tankers, 1638 buses,540 mini buses, 10,090 gypsies,17,385 cars, 1753 Maruti Vans, 163 large goods vehicles, 3 ambulances,950 tractors,7,377 autos,11,0665 two wheelers , 391 trailors and 4 JCBs.

On being asked if the number of vehicles is problematic and leads to traffic congestion, the concerned officer said that that the number of vehicles of the State does not amount to a district of Assam. It was further mentioned that market business, banks, schools, colleges are mainly located in the heart of the city, and thus the primary congestion arises, it was mentioned.

Further, in another query regarding the number registered under “KA-O3-MN” and “KA-51-Z” and how this particular registration is given, the concerned DTO mentioned that the directorate has no knowledge of which state registration it belongs to and is not of Manipur.
