CM Ibobi leads in paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi
IMPHAL, October 2: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh led the state in paying tribute to the ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi on his 143rd birth anniversary.
As in other parts of the country, the National Cleanliness Day in commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary was also observed in the state today.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh attended the function as the chief guest and accompanied by state Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing as the president.
He led a team of state Ministers, MLAs and several other state officials in paying rich floral tribute to a portrait of the Father of the Nation.
Addressing the observation, the Chief Minister said today people all over the country are observing the National Cleanliness Day.
The day is being observed every year in commemoration of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
Stressing on Gandhi’s philosophies of cleanliness, non-violence and peace, O Ibobi Singh urged all to follow in Babuji’s footsteps.
He said, Bapuji stood for truth, ahimsa (non-violence) and love between all communities. He always believed in breaking the walls that divide man from man and transcending the social barriers of caste, creed, colour, language, Babuji had fought to build a peaceful co-existence in the world.
During the observation, students and staffs of Shri Shri Balmukund Dev Government Music College also presented songs.
Elsewhere, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee also observed the day at the Congress Bhawan this morning.
MPCC president Gaikhangam led party Ministers, MLAs and other workers in paying rich tribute to a portrait of the Father of the Nation.
The attendees also took a pledge during the observation to follow in the footsteps of Bapuji.
Gaikhangam said that the United Nation Assembly had decided on June 15, 2007 that the International Day of Non Violence will be observed every year on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
He continued violence will never bring solution any issue and as such people should follow in the footsteps of Gandhiji and practice non-violence to bring peace and development in the state.
Meanwhile, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary is also observed as the International Day of Non-violence.
The 6th International Day of Non-violence was observed in the state at the Manipur Press Club today organized by the Organizing Committee International day of Non Violence, Manipur comprising of several organizations.
Eminent Gandhian, Padmashree Rajkumar Jhaljit, Senior Citizens’ for Society Manipur, president, L Binoy, former Chief Engineer, M Ibohal, MU, Political Science, professor Ksh Bimola and retd Principal Manipur College, Prof L Sadananda attended the function as chief guest and presidium members.
Padmashree Rajkumar Jhaljit led the observation in offering floral tribute to a portrait of father of the nation.
Meanwhile, according to a PRO IGAR (S) release, 30 AR of 9 sector under hq IGAR (S) organized a cleanliness drive at Khurkhul in connection with the day and the 37 AR of 28 Secotr under hq IGAR (S) organized an inter school patriotic poem recitation and music completion at Joupi.
