Senapati rallies against assault, demands prompt action
IMPHAL, Sep 24 : A protest rally was taken out today at Senapati district headquarters against the physical assault of Senapati District Olympic Association Manipur president and former student leader T Robert Maram.
The protest rally was demanding befitting action against all the culprits involved in assaulting T Robert Maram at Ching-Tam Hotel, North AOC on September 13.
YK Kaping, convenor of the core committee constituted in connection with the assault and reported life attempt on T Robert said that the assault took place when Robert went to have a meal in the hotel in the night of September 13.
T Robert went to Imphal to call on the Governor and other Government officials. As Robert went out with a friend to have dinner, they saw their friend Ningreishang Zimik having dinner inside the hotel.
They asked Hotel Manager Khaidem Sarat to give them a note-pad and a pen for jotting telephone numbers. At this, Sarat roughly flung a note-pad between Robert and Zimik.
After using the note-pad, Robert flung it back to the manager. At this, the manager hit Robert on the head from behind using a heavy object.
A few moments later, when Robert regained consciousness, he asked the Manager why he was being attacked. But the Manager did not give any reply and continued assaulting Robert. Such assault was not human nature, decried Kaping.
At the call (through telephone) of the Manager, some armed persons in civilian fatigues arrived at the scene and joined in thrashing Robert. They also flashed their guns and tried to get Robert in a vehicle. Sarat’s daughter-in-law Romola who is an SI also came there but she did not utter a word. Robert, somehow managed to shake off his assailants and ran into another hotel from where he returned to Senapati the same night.
Later, he lodged a complaint to police.
Today’s rally was to urge the Government to book the culprits and deliver justice. In case, the Government fails to act, more agitation are in the pipeline, Kaping cautioned. The core committee has been demanding the authorities to book all the people both civil and uniformed personnel involved in the incident and interrogate them in presence of the committee. Meanwhile, Senapati District Women Association Speaker Henya has decried the failure of the Government to take up any action till date regarding the incident.
