Radhamani Devi: A national award winner from Manipur

Imphal : Radhamani Devi, a national award winner from Manipur, runs an embroidery unit and actively promotes the art form in the region along with training young women.

Devi, 56, is not just another successful entrepreneur, but also someone who has transformed the lives of many underprivileged women by training them and making them financially independent.

In 1970's she started Pioneer Women's Welfare Association with support from her husband to train women in embroidery skills.

She later set up small-scale units that produce embroidery items.
Devi has been in this profession for the last 40 years and was honoured with a national award in 2004 in recognition of her service to society.

Devi said: "After getting the award I trained some girls from my area and taught them for free. Some of them did not know anything at all, but slowly they picked up the skills. Later they trained for six months for which they also got a certificate. Now, I send them as teachers to different places."

Santiya Rani, a trainee, said: "Earlier, I did not know anything about stitching or design, but our teacher (Radhamani) taught us everything and I have even got a state award. I have learnt so many new things from her."

Devi was born in 1956 to Late Mayanglambam Khomdon Singh and Mangolbi and was the eldest among four children. She learnt hand embroidery from her mother.

Today, she trains many underprivileged girls with an aim to provide them skills as well as promote the art form.

Devi said: "Whatever I know or have learnt, I want to teach them so that they follow in my steps."
Shana Roma, a trainee, said: "Our teacher has taught us very well and we have learnt many new designs. She is supporting us and if we do it properly then it will benefit us a lot."

Devi has been participating in various exhibitions both in Manipur and outside the state and has been appreciated for her work.

Her efforts to help others are praiseworthy and she is a source of inspiration for many.
