2354 persons in Chandel district getting pensions under NSAP

Imphal, October 31: The total number of pensioners who are getting Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) under the National Social Assistance Programme(NSAP) in Chandel district is 2354, stated Mr. M. Chaoba Singh, District Social Welfare officer(DSWO), Chandel on the concluding day of the three-day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign being held at Koshang Memorial Community Hall at Khangshim village in Chandel district today.

Mr. Chaoba said, in all there are 2770 beneficiaries/ pensioners of IGNOAPS in the district. Out of them, 2425 pensioners have opened accounts in the banks, and 345 are yet to open accounts, while 2354 pensioners have been receiving pensions through Electronic Benefit Transfer(EBT) through their    bank accounts.

Only those persons who are of 60 years and above, and really poor are awarded this pension, he said.

He further said that there are five different Centrally sponsored pension schemes under the NSAP, and  one State sponsored pension scheme known as Manipur Old Age Pension Scheme(MOAPS). The five pension schemes under NSAP are Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme(IGNOAPS), Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme(IGNWPS), Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme(IGNDPS), National Family Benefit Scheme(NFBS) and Annapurna Yojana Scheme.

Each beneficiary of all pension schemes gets Rs 200 per month. However as the Government does not release funds every month, the pension is given to the beneficiaries once in four or six or nine months together.

Out of 227 widow beneficiaries in Chandel district, 211 beneficiaries have opened their bank accounts, and 198 widows have received  pension benefit of Rs 1,200 for the period from July 2011 to December 2011, i.e., for six months, through their bank accounts.

Likewise, out of 65 disabled persons who have applied for the Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS), 18 persons have been benefitted while 38 disabled persons have opened their bank accounts, and 27 are yet to open their accounts, Mr. Chaoba said.

He appealed to those beneficiaries who have not yet opened their accounts to open accounts as soon as possible , because the government may any time terminate those who have not opened their accounts.
