Jiribam journalists decry threat

IMPHAL, August 8: The All Jiribam Working Journalists Union has decried the threat meted by a group to the state media. A meeting held by the Union appealed to withdraw the threats and to preserve the sanctity of the state media.

Those who are supposedly fighting the war of independence should not limit themselves to making threats and hoaxes to the media. Further, stating that editors will be given capital punishment for not publishing articles is unbecoming of a revolutionary and hence should be stopped immediately, a release by Lukhoi Atom, general secretary of AMWJU, Jiribam states.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Initiative has decried the threats meted to the media by an unknown organization. A press statement by the organization’s Executive Director, Wahengbam Joykumar mentions that August 9 is observed globally as the International Day’s on World Indigenous People.

The theme of the year is “Indigenous media” and the media has a huge role in propagating the traditions of the ethnic communities.

The culture and history of a community is reflected in the news articles which are in one way upholding the rights of the communities living in the north eastern region. Disturbing and threatening those working for the rights of the indigenous populace is not in the interest of the public and should be stopped immediately, it said.

The organization greets the public on the eve of the Indigenous Day observation.
