Parliamentary Secretary YAS Prithviraj seeks canoeing and slalom centre

New Delhi, July 16:Manipur Parliamentary Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports and Tourism Mairembam Prithviraj today at 3 pm met the Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent charge) and the Minster of State for Defence in his office chamber at Shastri Bhawan here and pursued for establishment of one Canoeing and Slalom Centre in Manipur. The meeting was attended by the Union Secretary of Sports P.K.Dev.
Mairembam Prithviraj informed the Union Minister that Manipur Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh had already intimated the matter to the Director General of Sports Authority of India since the Sports Authority of India was contemplating to establish two centres of canoeing and Slalom in the country during the current year to train peddlers. He mentioned that Manipuri boys and girls dominated the country in peddling and produced five national coaches serving in the Ministry of Defence and other States.
Parliamentary Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports also urged the Union Minister to accord the Thang-Ta Federation of India as national federation and the Thang-Ta as a sports discipline. He reminded him that the Manipur Chief Minister had already written a letter to him in the matter in the month of February this year. He explained that the Thang-Ta was an indigenous form of martial arts of Manipur. This ancient sport had been refined to acquire the status of a sports discipline and its forms and movements were no less than other recognized martial arts sports. It had gained tremendous popularity not only in the State of Manipur but also in different parts of the world.
Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jitendra Singh informed the Parliamentary Secretary that he would visit Manipur on July 21 along with the Director General of SAI Jiji Thomson to see sports infrastructure development in Manipur.
