Minor girl saved from non-local

IMPHAL, November 6: Even as several local bodies have been crying hoarse demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit citing fear of non-locals flooding over the local indigenous population; a non local was today nabbed while trying to flee with a minor from the state.

The FREINDS today called a press conference at its Keishampat office and produced the 21 year old non local before media persons.

FREINDS said the non-local will be later handed over to the police.

Speaking at the press conference, secretary organization, Premkumar Pebam said, 21 year old Vijay Kumar Shah of Bushani District, Bihar was nabbed by the Manipur Winger Transporter Union while trying to get inter-state bus tickets from the North AOC area on November 4 morning.

He was trying to get tickets for Dimapur for himself and the 13 year old girl whom he had enticed to elope with him.

The union later handed the both the boy and the girl to the FREINDS.

Elaborating on the issue, the spokesperson said Vijay Kumar entered Manipur in 2005 and started working at a vehicle workshop at Chandel.

At present he is working along with his uncle Ram Nath in a vehicle workshop at Churachandpur New Bazar.

He had met the girl during a wedding ceremony of one of the girl’s relatives, Premkumar said.

He continued, Vijay Kumar’s father Ram Naresh Shah is living with his second wife at Silliguri after staying in Manipur for a long time.

Vijay Kumar had wooed the class V student and enticed her further to elope on just the 16th day of their meeting and kept her at residence of the owner of the workshop in Chandel where he was working before, he said. He was nabbed by the Winger union on November 4 morning after getting suspicious of his movement from near the Misao Gas counter at North AOC.

He continued that Vijay Kumar’s purse contained condoms and indecent pictures.

Meanwhile, FREINDS president, Sapamcha Jadumani said that the act of the 21 year old of kidnapping a local minor even as several organizations in the state are fighting for implementation of the ILP in the state, smacks of disdain towards the communities of the state.

He continued that there is no checking or verification of the non-locals who enter the state on a daily basis and as such it is hard to identify them. Since their verification is not done during their entry into the state, it is hard to trace them out once they commit a crime and flee from the state.

In such a case scenario, it is only logical for the people of the state to understand the issue at hand and not let their premises to the non-locals without proper verification with the police, he said.

He further added that all non-locals should be asked to provide their domicile certificates from their home states while entering the state.
