Bombayla Devi bows out in pre-quarters

London: The disappointing show by Indian archers continued as Laishram Bombayla Devi bowed out in the pre-quarterfinals of the women's individual recurve event losing 2-6 to Mexico's Roman Aida at the Lord's ground here today.
This was after Bombayla won her first round encounter against Evangelia Psarra of Greece 6-4. In individual events, which is decided on best of five sets (three arrows each), one who wins a set irrespective of the margin gets two points.
The target score in the pre-quarterfinal match against Aida was 107-93 in favour of the Mexican. Bombayla missed the target altogether as she got a zero in the fourth set which turned out to be the decider.
It wasn't that the Mexican archer was in great form but more due to Bombayla's inconsistent performance. After hitting five 10s in his first round encounter, Bombayla could only log 10 on two occasion compared to four times by her opponent.
Aida set the tone with a 30 in the first set along with 26 and 27 in the two other sets, that she won.
Earlier, there was some cheer at last for the Indian archers as Bombayla won her first round encounter against Psarra.
Bombayla, who shot a 4 in the penultimate round had five 10s as she won 6-4, having clinched three out of the five sets. The target score was 129-125 in Bombayla's favour.
Psarra was off to a great start, hitting couple of 10s in her first set which she won 27-25 thereby taking a 2-0 lead. Bombayla started the second set with a perfect 10 followed by couple of 9s as she took the set at 28-24.
The set scores were thus level at 2-2 and Bombayla had a great third set where he scored 28 with two 10's to take a 4-2 lead. The fourth set turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax as Bomabyla to everyone's horror hit a four but then made a comeback with a 10 and 9.
The target score was 23-23 but went in favour of the Greek woman. The final set score was 25-25 but Bombayla hit a 10 which clinched it in her favour.
