Mass Tree Plantation in Guwahati by ICC and Biofresh Next marks the World Environment Day

The program started off with the song ‘O Mur Aapunar Desh’ being played by South Point School band which was greeted with standing ovation by all present in the venue. Adding to the spirit of being a responsible organization towards environment and its sustainability, Indian Chamber of Commerce celebrated the World Environment Day 2012 in order to reinstate the importance of sustainable development and the fact that the environment needs to be saved. The Initiative of Mass Tree Plantation drive in Guwahati City in association with BiofreshNext with support from Dept. of Environment & Forest, Government of Assam, Dept of PWD, Government of Assam and corporate sectors such as Oil India Limited (OIL), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC); Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) and Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited. In the weeklong program trees would be planted in various localities of Guwahati including NH 37, Chandmari Mother Teresa Road.
In his welcome address Ishantor Sobhapandit Regional Director ICC-NER outlined the importance of Tree Plantation. ICC in its statement said, ‘ The importance of trees in purifying the air, as natural resources, maintaining the ecological balance, preventing soil erosion, as medicines, habitats for faunal species, providing nutrients to the soil etc. is well known. The present forest and tree cover in the country according to the State of Forest Report 2001 of the Forest Survey of India is 23.03 per cent. According to the National Forest Policy, the country is required to achieve a forest cover target of 25 per cent by 2007 and 33 per cent cover by 2012. The involvement of people - particularly at the grassroots level - and agencies outside the Government is crucial for achieving these targets and the ICC is taking up this initiative in North east.’ Mr. Simanta Talukdar President of BiofreshNext delivered the theme address on Green Economy: Does it include You?
Abdul Khaleque Press Secretary to CM in his address as a Guest of Honour said that Tarun Gogoi led Congress Government is committed towards ‘Clean and Green Assam’ and various schemes have been initiated towards making Assam clean and green and make it a more better place to dwell in. Speaking on the need of mass awareness and publicity on Green Economy, Khaleque categorically stated that chambers and organizations like Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) taking this initiative will definitely contribute towards achieving goal greener Assam and I am happy to see corporate sectors like Oil India Limited, ONGC, Indian Oil, Ramky supporting such initiatives. He congratulated BiofreshNext NGO and the ICC for the initiative and wished all success.
Rimpy Das youngsters heart throb and actor of the Assamese Cine Industry in her short address said I am overwhelmed on being called the ambassador of such initiatives. We the artists try to reach out common man on various issues its always good when we reach out maximum on such noble initiative. I stand for CLEAN and GREEN GUWAHATI and I want all of you to make Guwahati cleaner and greener.
Capt Robin Bordoloi Chairman GMDA & MLA, East Guwahati Constituency in his inaugural address as the Chief Guest spoke briefly on World Environment Day and initiatives taken by GMDA to see a Greener Guwahati and Cleaner Guwahati. In his address he appreciated initiatives taken by the ICC and Biofresh to plant over thousands of tree across Guwahati which is being supported by the Dept. of Environment and Forests and PWD Dept. He further added that children are the messenger of such noble initiatives and youths must implement such causes and come forward to contribute towards pollution free nation. Capt. Bordoloi concluding his speech said,’Youths and Children are the Ambassador of the Green and Green Guwahati’ verifying the need of keeping guwahati neat and green.
Students of the school surrounding the venue, youths of guwahati, responsible citizens, members of press fraternity and members of ICC and BiofreshNext attended the program along with government officials.
