Mamta Yumnam becomes the first Indian woman body builder to win Asian medal

Imphal, June 15: Body-builder Mamta Yumnam  became the first woman medallist among Indian after she bagged bronze medal in the 46th Mr Asia for Men & Women held at Tashkent in Uzbekistan from June 2-3. She was paid a rousing welcome by her localities , All-Manipur Body-building Fitness Association and her family members today in Imphal.

Mamta Devi, along with her husband Borun Yumnam, who also participated in the same meet and stood fourth, arrived at Imphal  Airport this evening. Her husband Borun was a Mr Asia silver medallist in 2009 and finished ninth in the Mr World championship.

Speaking  to media at the airport, Mamta said it was a challenging task to get recognition in the Asian and international arena, but she got immense encouragement and guidance from her husband.

She said the tournament in Tashkent was her first competition and she was happy to get a bronze medal.

Mamta, the mother of three, urged other women body builders in the state to come forward and give a shot to bringing more laurels for the country and state as well. After her success in her debut event, she is now eyeing the world championship, which will be held in Madrid in October.

Mamta said she along with her husband had opened Impact gym in New Delhi in 2010 and her husband was employed with CRPF as a sub-inspector.
