22nd Kh Anou Singh Chess Tourney begins
IMPHAL, June 3: The oldest cash prize chess tournament of the state, 22nd Kh Anou Singh Memorial State Level Open Chess Tournament 2012 was formally opened today by N Raghumani Singh, chairperson, Imphal Municipal Council as the chief guest at Kwakeithel Junior High School.
The tournament is participated by 68 players including 22 rated players and 4 girls. The tournament shall be played for seven rounds under Swiss League System daily at 6:30 in the morning to decide the winners of this Rs 17,000 cash prize.
In the first round played today, the top seed Kh Sanjoy (1pt), a former Telegraph Chess Champion, with the white piece earned full point defeating his rival L Shyamkishore. Employing the Ruy Lopez, the top seed forced his opponent to surrender in 65 moves. With the previous year champion Appolosana missing the tournament, last year’s runners-up Sanjoy is starting with a positive note to get his median title this year.
Exciting matches are expected in the next six rounds. Second round matches will be played tomorrow from 6:30 am.
