Union DoNER Minister Inaugurates the Manipur Sangai Festival 2013, First International Flight Landed at Imphal Airport
Imphal, November 21: The Manipur Sangai Festival 2013 has been inaugurated by the Union DoNER Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar this afternoon at Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal. The inaugural function was attended among others by the two Chief Ministers of Myanmar who arrived this morning along with a huge delegation by a chartered flight from Mandalay creating history of being the first International flight to be landed at Imphal Airport.
Inaugurating the 10 day mega event Ghatowar expressed his hope that Manipur, the jewel of India, will one day become the best performing state of India. Stating Manipur as a little paradise on earth, he said that the Sangai Festival will provide a platform to display its vibrant art and culture. He appreciated the Manipur Government for organising such a mega festival showcasing its potentials for attracting tourists which is proved with the presence of Myanmar delegates including two Chief Ministers. He also mentioned that the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) is always for the socio economic development of the North East Region.
Manipur Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh who presided over the function appealed to the DoNER Minister to urge the Prime Minister, Home Minister and the External Affairs Minister to immediately open Regional Passport Office at Imphal and Visa on Arrival facility at Imphal Airport and at Moreh. He also took the opportunity to appeal to the DoNER Minister to provide more funds from the ministry in the infrastructure and other developmental projects being taken up in Manipur.He also hoped that the relationship with Myanmar specially with the Sagaing and Mandalay regions will be further strengthened with more exchanges of culture, trade, education and health sector.
Chief Minister Mandalay Region U Ye Myint and Sagaing Region Chief Minister U Thar Aye who were present as guests of honour also spoke on the occasion and expressed that the goodwill visit to Manipur will lead to a good relationship between Myanmar and Manipur bringing stronger ties between the people.
Deputy CM shri Gaikhangam and Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Gautam Mukhopadhyai also spoke on the occasion. Later, a 45 minutes long Chorographic presentation on the theme “Manipur- A Tourist Destination through Culture” was staged. The 10 day mega event is organised to showcase what Manipur has be it in the field of art and culture, handloom and handicrafts, indigenous games including Polo, indigenous cuisines, natural beauties etc with the objective of attracting tourists in the state for developing tourism industry.
Earlier in the morning, the delegates from Myanmar led by the two Chief Ministers arrived at Imphal Airport at around noon by a chartered flight from Mandalay creating history of being the first International flight to be landed at Imphal.The Myanmar delegates were received by Chief Minister O. Ibobi, his council of Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries at the Airport and then the Mandalay and the Sagaing Chief Minsters along with Ministers and officials who accompanied them were shown the facilities at the Shija Hospital,RIMS Hospital, JNIMS and Babina Diagnostic Centre,Porompat and then the Manipur High Court and finally the Assembly Complex at Chingmeirong.
