RIMS clarifies on ceiling cave-in incident

IMPHAL, November 19: Director of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Dr S Sekharjit, has issued another clarification on yesterday’s incident when a portion of ceiling of a deluxe room of the Special Ward caved in injuring a patient on her face.

Speaking to media persons at his office, Dr S Sekharjit said the ward was more than 35 years old and was constructed and donated by a businessman in the name of his family. Except for some portion of the balcony, RIMS authority had taken no role in the construction of the building, he added.

He further clarified that the news reports contending that the ward was renovated and re-inaugurated on November 13 was absolutely untrue.

He expressed his regret over the incident, stating that it was totally unexpected that an unfortunate incident of disintegration of the roofing material could happen at the deluxe ward. He further informed that immediately after the accident, Medical Superintendant of RIMS and surgeons rushed to the ward and enquired about the condition of the injured patient, Ningthoujam ongbi Ophelia, 48, wife of Joshabanta. Her operation has been performed and her condition is stable, he added.

He further added that he had instructed the Engineering Cell of RIMS and take up repair work so that such type of incident are not repeated. The ground floor has been emptied and patient will not be accommodated in the rooms there until complete renovation is done, he added. He mentioned that the ward had been used as PG Hostel for many years and admission of patient began just one year back.

On the other hand, he stated that some individuals are creating apprehension among the selected teachers and professors of the recently opened dental college by sending threat letters in past few weeks. Regarding the situation they have complained with the Lamphel police station, he said

He further said last month an interview was held for selection of assistant professor, professor, lectures and other required post at New Delhi from  October 7 to 10 by the Ministry of Health with the participation of officials and experts of Dental Council of India official and appointment were considered based on the interview.

After they were selected in the interview they were offer terms and conditions to be signed by RIMS and during the course of time some individuals recently threatened the selected candidates by sending letters not to come to Manipur to join their jobs with the explanation that the staffs at the college should be of Manipuri origin only, he stated.
