59th Sahara Men’s National Boxing Championships begins

Hyderbad, October 30: A grand opening ceremony which saw the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad come to life, acted as the curtain raiser to the 59th Sahara Men’s National Boxing Championships presented by the Monnet Ispat and Energy Limited. His Excellency Shri ESL Narasimhan, Governor of Andhra Pradesh the Chief Guest of the ceremony, graced the event with his presence and declared the event open.

He also commended the Andhra Pradesh Amateur State Boxing Association (APABA) for its continued efforts in expanding the level of the sport in the state and organising the National Championships for a record fifth time. Shri Narasimhan also felicitated Beijing Olympics bronze medallist Vijender Singh for his contribution to the sport of boxing, along with other boxing dignitaries. President of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation, Shri Abhishek Matoria congratulated APABA on an excellent effort in putting together the premier event of the national circuit.

He said, “The national title holds a special place in every boxer’s career, this is one award every athlete yearns to have and the AP state boxing association have done a grand job of making it a memorable experience for all participants. Talking about the sport he further added, “We have seen a big surge in the popularity of boxing in India and it has largely been due to the iconic figures that have emerged in the sport. We as administrator of the sport need to provide the necessary platform and opportunities for more boxers to be able to be icons.”

DAY 1 Results
Action got underway in the light fly weight division with 34th National Games gold medallist Sunil Kumar of the Railways and 2010 Youth National Championship bronze medallist Gaurav Bidhuri securing easy passages into the next round of the tournament.

In a display of raw power and agility Sunil trounced Sajay Mishra of Madhya Pradesh. The 23 year old hardly broke a sweat to get past Mishra in what was a clinical display of superlative boxing. The nimble footed Bidhuri too was in sublime touch, as he stormed past Netra Bahadur of Himachal Pradesh.

In the bantam weight division former national champion and Services boxer Chhote Lal Yadav avenged his 2011 National Championship loss against Maniknandan V of the Railways. The 24 year old put up a sterling performance against some solid attacking by the Railways boxer. Yadav established an early two point lead with the help of some heavy hitting and power punches (5-3).

He continued with the aggressive play in the second round and the increased the lead to seven points. In the end he marched into the next round with an overall score of 16-6. Amit Bisht of Rajasthan also advanced into the next round with a victory over Jitendra Kumar Verma of the SPSB team.
