Sunil Chhetri To Lead India In Nehru Cup Football Tournament

New Delhi, August 22: Nehru Cup kicks-off at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi from today and besides hosts India, last edition’s runners-up Syria, Cameroon, Maldives and Nepal will also be participating in the tournament. Each team will play each other once in the round robin format with the top-two advancing to the final which is slated to be played on the 2nd of September.
Star striker Sunil Chhetri was named captain of the Indian team for the Nehru Cup international football tournament.
The 28 year old who is currently playing for Sporting Clube de Portugal B in the Liga de Honra said, “It’s a huge honour to lead the country.
The newly appointed National coach Wim Koevermans announced Chhetri’s name after a team practice session at the Jaypee Greens ground on Monday.
Defending champions India will kick start their campaign of Nehru Cup 2012 against Syria on the 22nd of August, 2012 at 7 pm.
