State observes Patriots’ Day
Imphal, Aug 13: Patriots’ Day was observed across the State by various political parties and civil bodies, paid sincere homage and show gratitude to the heroic forefathers of Manipur who perished motherland on Monday.
The state main function was held at Shahid Minar, B T road organized by the state government where Governor, Gurbachand Jagat and Chief Minister, O Ibobi Sigh attended the programme as chief guest and president, pay floral tribute to the Martyrs Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal general at Sahid Minar, the place where the two martyrs were hang by the British.
Speaking as a chief guest, Gurbachan Jagat said that we are celebrating Patriots’ Day, to pay homage and tribute to the brave sons of Manipur, who made supreme sacrifices on the gallows for the cause of their motherland on this day, 121 yrs ago here at this place.
However, Manipur has been facing a number of problems’ today, we all are aware of Manipuri’s problems. In some ways they are unique but in many ways they are common to large parts of the country.
Ethnic and social tensions, extortion from public for ransom, senseless killing due to inter group rivalries and violence against civilians/women continue to be a matter of serious concern.
Again, calling of strikes and bandhs including economic blockaded have become a frequent phenomenon. The ultimate suffers of all are common people. Such practice should be avoided in the interest of the common man. And added that confidents that the general people will extend their fullest cooperation to the government to maintain peace and harmony in the state.
Chief Minister O.Ibobi Singh who attended as president of the function said that it was on this day way back in1891, that the two heroes of Manipur, Tikendrajit Singh and Thangal General were hanged by the British for waging war against the British Empire.
121 years has passed since the two heroes of Manipur were hanged to death but the people of the state did not forget to salute Bir Tikendrajit Singh and Thangal General on this Historic day that they sacrifices for their motherland.
And further said that, from today let’s take oath newly to resolved responsibility to preserve integrity, territorial and bring communal harmony and development in the state.
In the earlier of the day offering of floral tribute to the Martyrs Bir Tikendrajit located at Hicham Yaicham pat Moirangkhom and Thangal General at Palace compound was attended by the CM O Ibobi Singh, Home Minister G Gaihangam and cabinet minister and MLAs.
During the observation the 1st Manipur Rifle personnel paid a gun salute to the martyrs followed by two minute silent.
Besides, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) also observe the Patriots’ Day at it office campus led by the G Gaikhangam, Home Minister and President of MPCC.
In the meantime, Manipur People’s Party (MPP) also observed the Patriot’s Day at its office today. At the observation Dr. L. Chandramani, Advisor MPP & former deputy chief minister of Manipur, Sanasam Umananda, president MPP and Dr. Dhananjoy ex-speaker were presided as a presidium member.
And Joint student union of DM College also observed the Patriot’s Day at the DM college campus.
