Ovary transplant could help women delay having a baby, menopause
A doctor has claimed that a treatment involving ovary transplant could allow women to delay having a bay and the menopause.
Dr Sherman Silber, who conducted the first of its kind operation, said that transplants or grafts could be used for such treatments. Currently, ovary transplants are used to save ovaries of those being treated for cancer.
Transplanting ovaries or ovarian tissue is used to help women undergoing cancer treatment to preserve their fertility. The drugs that are used to treat cancer may impact ovaries and thus doctors take tissue taken in advance and froze it for preservation. The tissues are replanted when the women is ready to get pregnant.
Dr Sherman Silber at the Infertility Center of Saint Louis, Missouri s presented the examples of three women who had frozen and thawed ovary grafts as well as nine women who had fresh ovary grafts. Dr Silber said that eight babies have been born in total to the women.
Dr Silber said, "Transplanted ovarian tissue can robustly restore menstrual cycles and fertility and may even in the future be used to postpone the normal time of menopause or to alleviate its symptoms."( Courtesy: Top News)
