NHRC directs Karnataka govt to submit action taken report

IMPHAL, July 2: Responding to a written complaint lodged by the mother of Loitam Richard, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi has directed the Karnataka government to submit an action taken report on the alleged murder case of Richard to it within four weeks.

Reports said the complaint was lodged to NHRC by Ningthemchamayum Vidyapati Devi, 50, the mother of Loitam Richard, a resident of Uripok Yambem Leikai, Imphal West.

In the complaint, Vidyapati, wife of L Rajeshkumar pleads that all the accused in his son’s case should be punished after finding out the truth.

After admitting the complaint, NHRC issued an official order in this regard on June 6 and later directed the Karnataka government to submit an action taken report on the Richard’s death to the commission within four weeks.

The Karnataka government has also been informed that the 48-day dateline should be counted from the day of receipt of the notice, sources said.

The official notice of the commission signed by its Assistant Registrar (Law) was addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Karnataka. It was sent to the Commissioner of Police on June 13 last.

It is also said that a copy of the same notice sent to the Commissioner of Police, Karnataka is now with Vidyapati, the sources added.

The Forensic Laboratory at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) is now conducting a re-examination on the post mortem report of Richard and the same will be sent to the CID Crime Branch of Karnataka for further investigation on the case.

Richard, who was a student of Acharya Institute of Architecture, Bangalore, was found dead in his hostel room on May 18. The allegations are that he was beaten to death by his seniors over an IPL match.
