AMSU’s Raj Bhawan demonstration disrupted

IMPHAL, June 29: Police on Friday blocked members of AMSU from staging a sit-in protest in front of Raj Bhawan.

The protest was supposed to take place as part of the agitation launched by North East Students’ Organization (NESO) across North Eastern states in protest against alleged marginalization of the people in other parts of the country.

A team of City Police led by its Officer-in-charge, Tejbir along with another police team led by SDPO, Imphal West district Police arrived at the scene and barred the group of students from staging the sit-in protest in front of Raj Bhawan gate here.

Police dispersed the demonstrators tearing down their banner and placards, creating a melee in the process.

Earlier in the morning, leaders and volunteers of the student body gathered inside the TG Higher Secondary School campus and prepared for a sit-in protest to be staged in front of the Raj Bhawan.

However, they were blocked by a large number of police personnel from City Police and Imphal West who arrived at the scene as the protestors came out of the campus heading towards Raj Bhawan.

The police quelled them and stopped them from launching the protest.

The police tore down the banner and placards held by the student protestors which resulted in a minor scuffle between the police and the students.

No student volunteers were detained by the police in the incident.

AMSU said the act of the police was really unfortunate. They also alleged that the Indian government has treated the people of the NE as second class citizens and that this issue should be brought before the UN.
